3) TIME:
Hearings are scheduled “At the rise of the House” which is 3:45pm.
- This is BY PHONE so you will RECEIVE a call from the committee when it’s your turn to speak.
- This means HAVE YOUR PHONE ON AND WITH YOU and be ready to go to a QUIET PLACE with no background noise including turn your computer volume off if you have it with you.
- You will be put on hold and as soon as the clerk comes back to you, your time will begin.
- You will have 2 minutes to speak, so prepare to be stopped promptly at that time. If you’re warned about time simply say, “In conclusion…” and finish up. DO NOT READ WHAT YOU WROTE IN YOUR EMAILS. This is the time to speak from the heart and emphasize your most important points and/or anything you didn’t already write.
- There can be A LOT of wait time as things come to order and other bills are on the agenda.(If you watch the hearing on Capitol TV, the broadcast is delayed, so please don’t rely on it to tell you when you’ve been called.)
- PLEASE block out the afternoon/evening to be ready for the call and move to a quiet space so you can speak for your 2 minutes.
